Welcome to the future of medical education

Dr. Barbara Schuster

A partnership of two prominent state institutions plus a supportive medical community and the energy of Athens equals an unparalleled opportunity for the education of future physicians. It’s no wonder I was drawn to the challenge of being the founding Campus Dean of the GRU/UGA Medical Partnership!

I am confident that the Partnership Campus in Athens is educating outstanding future physicians in keeping with the high standards of the Georgia Regents University and the University of Georgia. Our faculty members, who work in concert with the medical faculty at GRU and colleagues from many of the colleges at UGA, have a passion for teaching and a love of learning. The Partnership Campus emphasizes small group learning and student/teacher interaction. The small class size enables innovation in teaching and makes it easier to incorporate early clinical experiences into the curriculum.

The GRU/UGA Medical Partnership began in a newly renovated, historic building on the North Oconee River in 2010. The campus relocated to its permanent home on the UGA Health Sciences Campus in July of 2012. Two blocks from Athens Regional Medical Center and minutes from St. Mary’s Hospital, the UGA Health Sciences Campus also houses the UGA College of Public Health. The combination of Public Health, the local hospital systems and the medical campus will facilitate clinical education as well as basic and clinical research. Collaboration with the Northeast Georgia Health System in Gainesville – just 40 minutes from the future campus – expands the options for clinical rotations, translational research and community outreach. Medical students will find multiple opportunities to become involved in the community, hospital care, ambulatory care and research laboratories.

I hope that you’ll consider the GRU/UGA Medical Partnership when applying to medical school at the Georgia Regents University. Our goal is to shape the future of medicine by providing the best education possible, and I’m glad you’re interested in being part of that future.
