Graduate Medical Education

Thank you for your interest in residency education sponsored by the GRU/UGA Medical Partnership.  The Internal Medicine Residency Program, a joint effort of the Medical Partnership and St. Mary’s Health Care System received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) on January 28, 2014 in the final step towards becoming Athens’ first medical residency program.

The program will provide training for MDs and DOs and will enter the National Resident Matching Program for recruitment of residents in the fall of 2014.  The ACGME approved 10 Internal Medicine residents to begin their training at St. Mary’s in July 2015, with plans for the program to grow to 30 residents by 2017.

The GRU/UGA Medical Partnership combines the significant instructional and research resources of UGA, the state’s flagship land-grant research university, with the expertise of GRU, Georgia’s only public medical school.

St. Mary's Health Care System is a member of the CHE Trinity Inc. and the hospital is licensed for 196 beds. It offers a comprehensive range of services to the surrounding community and northeast Georgia and is the recipient of numerous awards for outstanding quality of care. The Internal Medicine Residency Program in partnership with St. Mary’s Hospital will offer a comprehensive exposure to general internal medicine.  The educational program’s overall goals and objectives are to graduate outstanding competent, knowledgeable and qualified internal medicine physicians.
