SUMMARY:MOD Series 🧬 Race vs Ancestry in Breast Cancer Disparities: Social & Biological Determinants
DESCRIPTION:Students & Faculty please join us for the\nMechanisms of Disease\n2023-2024 SEMINAR SERIES\n \n \nPresented by\nMelissa B. Davis\, PhD\nDirector\,\nInstitute of Translational Genomic Medicine\nDistinguished Investigator\, \nGeorgia Research Alliance\nMorehouse School of Medicine\nLocation: Russell Hall\, Room 228\nAbout the Presenter: \nMelissa B. Davis\, PhD is the newly appointed Director of the Institute of Translational Genomic Medicine at Morehouse School of Medicine\, and Distinguished Investigator with the Georgia Research Alliance. She also serves as Scientific Director of the International Center for the Study of Breast Cancer Subtypes (ICSBCS)\, (Interim) Director of Health Equity for the Englander Institute of Precision Medicine and Associate Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology in the Department of Surgery and at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York\, NY. She is also a Cancer Ethnicity Scholar\, co leading the PolyEthnic-1000 project at New York Genome Center. \nDr. Davis received her Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics at the University of Georgia (Athens\, GA\, USA) where she completed groundbreaking work on developmental functions of steroid signaling in model organisms. She completed postdoctoral training in Functional Genomics and Systems Biology at Yale School of Medicine (Human Genetics) and the University of Chicago (Human Genetics and Institute for Genomics and Systems Biology). Here work involved key elements of the ModENCODE project\, showing the genome-wide and tissue-specific dynamics of hormone receptor binding\, establishing the dynamics of these functions on a cellular level. Her postdoctoral training in Cancer Health Disparities at University of Chicago at the Interdisciplinary Center for Health Disparities\, led the current trajectory of her work to uncover the biological determinants of cancer health disparities and how they intersect with marginalization of minoritized population. \nDr. Davis’s has published groundbreaking findings that established a new lens to study associations of biological factors in cancer outcomes as related to genetic ancestry. Specifically\, she has discovered links between African ancestry and tumor burdens that have a disproportionate burden in people across the African diaspora. Dr. Davis is a pioneer in the field of “disparities genomics\,” with specific focus in breast cancer expanding into prostate and gynecological cancers in recent years. Her current findings involve utilizing quantified ancestry to unravel genetic vs environmental influences in tumor biology among race/ethnic groups\, including epigenetic cell signaling and immunological responses in the tumor microenvironment and systemic immune regulation. These novel opportunities to develop precision medicine applications in minority populations\, are part of a concerted effort to increase knowledge of genomic profiles of underrepresented minoritized and under-represented cancer patients. Her work is a prime example of how inclusion of diverse ethnic groups can empower research designs for discovery of novel or unique tumor biology.

SUMMARY:MOD Series 🔬 Chagas disease: How Trypanosoma cruzi biology impedes chemo- and immuno-therapies
DESCRIPTION:Students & Faculty please join us for the\nMechanisms of Disease\n2023-2024 SEMINAR SERIES\n \nPresented by\nRick L. Tarleton\, PhD\n \nRegents’ Professor\,\nUGA Athletic Association Distinguished Professor in Biological Sciences\,\nUGA Department of Cellular Biology\,\nUGA Center for Tropical & Emerging Global Diseases \nLocation: HSC Russell Hall\, Room 228\nPersonal Statement: \nProfessor Rick Tarleton is a Regents’ Professor and UGA-Athletic Association Distinguished Research Chair in Biological Sciences at the University of Georgia\, Athens\, GA USA.  He was the Founding Director of the Center for Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases at UGA\, currently home to >25 labs working in the area of tropical parasitic diseases.  Prior to coming to UGA in 1984\, Rick spent one year at the University of Rochester as a post-doctoral fellow.  Both his B.A. and Ph.D. degrees are from Wake Forest University\, where he fell in love with Trypanosoma cruzi under the mentorship of Ray Kuhn. Since his undergraduate time\, he has worked nearly exclusively in the area of Chagas disease\, including studies of the mechanisms of immunity and disease in T. cruzi infection\, and the development of diagnostics\, therapeutics and vaccines for T. cruzi. Among other highlights\, his lab provided some of the seminal findings documenting parasite persistence (rather than autoimmunity) in the etiology of Chagas disease\, insights into the function of CD8+ T cells in immune control of T. cruzi and multiple tools for the study of T. cruzi\, including genomic\, transcriptomic and proteomic datasets and most recently adaptation of the CRISPR/Cas9 system for genome editing.  Among current projects in his lab are attempts at a better general understanding of the host:parasite interface in T. cruzi infection\, with a focus on how parasite biology impacts host responses\, discovery of biomarkers of cure in human\, non-human primate\, canine and murine T. cruzi infection\, and the development of improved regimens and discovery of new drugs for treating the infection.  Rick is the Founder and President of the Chagas Disease Foundation\, former chair of the U.S. NIH Immunity and Host Defense Study Section\, and founder and convener of the Chagas Drug Discovery Consortium.  Previous awards include the Burroughs Welcome Fund Scholar Award (1995) and the Lamar Dodd Outstanding Researcher Award\, University of Georgia\, 2012. \n  \n \nThis seminar is sponsored by the\nAU/UGA Medical Partnership\nOffice of Basic Sciences \n
