Jim Barker, MD grew up in Columbus, Kansas (population 2500) and attended the University of Kansas for both BA and MD degrees. He then did Internal Medicine Residency as well as academic Chief Residency at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky. This was followed by a Pulmonary/Critical Care/Sleep Medicine fellowship at the University of Miami. He has served in a wide variety of positions in the Midwest, Texas, and Southeastern USA. He comes to UGA from Sam Houston State University in Conroe, Texas (College of Osteopathic Medicine). Dr. Barker was a founding faculty member at SHSU COM and developed the Simulation, Standardized Patient, and Clinical Skills programs and curriculum there. In addition, he served as director of Rural Health education prior to coming to Athens.

Educational Activities

Dr. Barker is an active teacher in Small Group Learning for year 2. He participates as both a faculty facilitator and in developing SPAs and Large Group Learning topics. He also serves as a faculty substitute for SGL1 as well as delivering LGL or SPA topics. Dr. Jim Barker will also be seen filling in for other faculty in Clinical Skills 1 or Simulations as well as Procedural training and in clinical assessments. He is happy to function as an advisor for medical students, especially those interested in careers in Internal Medicine or in Pulmonary/Critical Care. This year Dr. Barker will serve as a clinic attending at St Mary’s resident clinic (CIMA) focusing on Pulmonary and Sleep patients as well as Internal Medicine patients. In addition, he is now working at the CPH Potter’s House Internal Medicine clinic with a group of M1 students. Finally, Jim Barker serves as the Chair (Administrative Head) of the Department of Clinical Sciences here at UGA.
