Associate Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology

Steve Vermillion, MD, is a board-certified specialist in Maternal-Fetal Medicine who brings decades of clinical excellence and academic leadership to the University of Georgia School of Medicine. A native of coastal Virginia, Dr. Vermillion earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Randolph-Macon College and his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

Dr. Vermillion served as Associate Professor at MUSC before joining the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine for the Medical Group of the Carolinas in Spartanburg, South Carolina, as AHEC Professor and practice partner. In 2023, he relocated to Athens, Georgia, where he currently practices with Maternal-Fetal Specialists of Georgia and serves on the teaching faculty at UGA School of Medicine.

Educational Activities

Dr. Vermillion is an active teacher in Small Group Learning for Year 1. He also serves as lecturer for third- and fourth-year OB/GYN students in the areas of High-Risk Pregnancy as well as assisting with Maternal-Fetal Medicine 4th year electives.

Scholarship & Research

Dr. Vermillion has demonstrated sustained leadership in advancing maternal and fetal health at regional and national levels. He has served on editorial advisory boards including the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and contributed to Committee Opinions and Practice Bulletins for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM). His research focuses on premature birth prevention, infectious diseases in obstetrics, and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. He has secured competitive funding from the March of Dimes and authored  numerous peer-reviewed publications and scholarly articles.
