Personal Statement:

Dr. Shruti Sharma is an Associate Professor in the Center of Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. Her major research interestsย are in understanding the role of vascular dysfunction in the microvascular complications of diabetes. Currently, her lab is focused on studying the inflammation-induced pathologies in diabetic retinopathy (DR), and has established the role of interleukin-6 trans-signaling as a novel therapeutic target in DR by using the drug-sgp130Fc. Our in-vitro and animal studies have shown that this drug can prevent inflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage, and apoptosis associated with diabetic retinopathy.
